From time to time, I receive announcements, etc that may be of interest to leaders or their youths, which I will post here. Leaders should also check out:
The information here is listed by the date it was posted, not by event dates.

In case you did not see the article in the Record, police checks may take a long time under new procedures.
If you happen to have the same gender and date of birth as a registered sex offender, you will be asked to submit to a fingerprint check. This will cost an additional $25, which, along with the $10 police record check fee, the 1st Elmira Scout Group will reimburse.
RCMP changed their procedure when they found out an ex-offender had received a pardon. Without the fingerprint check, if he changed his name he could receive a clear PRC. Unfortunately if the fingerprint check is required, this means the PRC could take as long as 120 days.
London Area running a residential Wood Badge Part I at Camp Sylvan (theme Frontierland) August 13-15, 2010. Cost $40 (Group Committee will re-imburse).

With the move of the CEC website, I had to fix lots of broken links. This has lead me to clean up this page from lots of old stuff. If you do find a broken link, please let me know - it is a constant challenge to keep up with these PHP-based websites and their ever moving content and unfriendly computer generated links.
Dropping ESQ Announcements: Unless someone lets me know that they are interested in ESQ programs and job opportunities, I'm going to stop posting them here.
Dropping Updated tags on home page: I'm also going to stop putting "updated" tags on the home page (first page you see when you come to www.elmirascouting.com). They are too much work to keep them current.
The Central Escarpment Council website has moved to http://www.cec.scouter.ca - links on this site have been updated but I may have missed some. Let me know if you find old links - it's a constant battle because all these PHP based websites move things around constantly.
Let them know if you find broken stuff. I found a couple already.
If you have not filled one out, please do so, and forward it to me either in paper or electronically. Here is the Scouting Career Checklist (Excel version, MS Word version) that you can edit and save. A PDF Version to print is also available. I'll forward a copy to Area and keep a copy so each year they are easier to update.
The North Waterloo website has moved to nw.scouter.ca - links here have been updated - update your bookmarks. Checkout the email history link above for the email about new features including the switch to Google Calendar like us.
There will be a BBQ for Leaders and Prospective Leaders at Brian's on Thursday, September 3rd - Bring the family - Hope to see you there!
All sections are looking for help so reach out to friends and any old Scouters you know.

Hi Scouter
It's time to Celebrate!.....February is an very important month in Scouting. February 22nd marks the birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell the founder of the Scout Movement. Coincidentally, B-P (born in 1857) and his wife Olave Baden-Powell (born in 1889), shared the same birthday.
Nearly all National Scout Associations throughout the world, celebrate this day as Founder's Day. In your own local group, it is usually the month that your BP Banquet is held where honours and awards are presented as well as any celebrations within the group.
Scouting is one of the largest youth organization and we, as leaders, have the responsibility to develop the skills, knowledge and attitude to deliver the mission of Scouting, that is - To contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
So how do we do that? There is a direct correlation between trained competent leaders, program excellence and membership retention and growth. Every council in Canada has identified the need to ensure we deliver a quality program to our youth, to deliver on the expectations of parents and youth in the program and achieve our Mission.
Scouts Canada has had a mandatory training policy requiring all leaders to successfully complete the Group or Section Wood Badge Part 1 course appropriate to their role for a long time. However, enforcement of this policy has not been consistent or a priority in recent years.
Although we inevitably need all leaders to be appropriately trained, it is not possible to accomplish within one year. Therefore enforcement of this policy will be phased in with the current mandate to be focused on new leaders who have joined since the 2007 Scouting Year. All new leaders who joined Scouts Canada subsequent to September 1, 2007 are required to complete the Group or Section Woodbadge Part I training appropriate to their role by August 31, 2009. All leaders who change sections, regardless of prior training are expected to have the requisite Group or Section Wood Badge Part 1 training appropriate to their new role.
So how and where do you take training? All approved Group or Section Wood Badge Part 1 training can be taken in any Area or Council. Listings of currently available training sessions within Central Escarpment and links to Greater Toronto and Shining Waters Council training sessions can be found at www.cec.scouter.ca under Training (scroll down a lot and look on the left hand side) or at the link Wood Badge Part I in CEC
What training do you need to take? Fundamentals is the "Introduction to Scouting" module of a Woodbadge Part I course. You need to take this Module first as it presents Scouting roles, lines of communication and responsibilities to new volunteers and provides the framework for Scouting. The four remaining modules in a Section or Group Commissioner Woodbadge are delivered by section and relate to section specific topics.
We offer Woodbadge Part I in two manners:
First - All of the modules are offered as a standalone. A number of them are scheduled and after you take Module 1, you can take them in whatever order that suits your schedule.
Second - A weekend course or a split course is offered. Module 1 usually occurs at the beginning of the weekend as well, and the rest of the weekend covers both material more generic to all sections, and then builds on that with information unique to each section. On a split weekend event, the Fundamentals is offered again at the beginning , but then the remainder of the course is section specific, dealing with ceremonies, badges, starts, and program planning and program delivery.
[Ed: I removed outdated information on course offerings - visit the FAQ page for links to various Training pages in surrounding councils.]
On Behalf of Central Escarpment Council and your Council Commissioner, Tony Copperthwaite, we thank you for taking the initiative and the time away from your family and commitments to become a better trained leader. As more courses come available, they will be posted on the council website at http://www.cec.scouter.ca
Yours in scouting,
