Badge of the Month

Badges and Stars
This year we will be working on Purple and Red stars. We also have some ideas for Cub Individual Speciality (ISB) badge.

Do Your Best and let the adventure begin!

For Purple Star we need 6 A requirements and 5 B requirements (many you do at school already).

For Red Star we need 5 A and 2 B requirements.

Third year Cubs need to complete Tawny Star on their own!

This year (2011-2012)... So far we have:

We also earned our Watercraft (WAT) badge Sep 20 & 27 and at Winter Camp completed Camping (CMP) and Space Exploration (SPC) badges.

Purple Star B requirements are often done at School, so with that in mind, parents should inform Akela if your Cub Scout has completed any of the requirements below. If your youth is new this year to Cubs, we will count any activities done in the 2011 calendar year. If your youth is a returning Cub Scout, we count any activities done since they first joined Scouting.

From last year (2010-2011)... we have:

We also earned our Astronomer (AST) badge Nov 23 and our Winter Cubbing (WIN) badge Jan 22 at Winter Camp.

At the Cuboree camp we covered the following badge and star requirements:

From 2009-2010... Red Star is Done! It is up to you to finish Blue Star! Here is what we did:

We also earned our First Aider badge - the first step towards earning the Emergency Preparedness Award (EPA). To complete this award, Cubs need to complete the Blue Star and earn the Family Safety (SFT) badge then make an Emergency Family Survival Kit (we will show you how at the Fire Hall).

Where you at the Centennial Cub Jamboree - CCJ'10?
If yes, here is the list of requirements you may have completed. "may" because we didn't do all 100 activities available on Wednesday.

Where you at Camp Everton Summer Camp?
If yes, here is the list of requirements you completed:

You also did several hikes which count towards your Hiking badge.

Earning Badges at Home
Q: How can a Cub earn badges at home?

A: Pick a badge you want to work on and read the requirements carefully. Some badges require you do all the requirements and some badges you only have to do some of the requirements. As you finish each requirement, have your parents initial and date your Cub Book. When you are done, tell your Sixer you are ready to do badge testing and a leader will ask you questions to see what you did. Yes, it is that easy!

But you don't have to work on just one badge at a time! You can do a few requirements of one badge, then leave the rest for later while you work on another badge. If you check out online version of badge requirements (see top of this page) you can see how working on the requirement for one badge may apply to other badges (Red Star A3 and Swimmer Badge requirement 1)

Tips on Placing Badges on Your Sash
Q: Where do badges go on my sash?

A: There is a diagram in your Cub Book showing the placement of badges. From the top:

Climate Change Crest (CCC)
Q: Looking for the online part of this crest?

A: Check out Scouts Canada Climate Change web page for more information.

Computer Badge (COM)
Q: Looking for ideas for 7b) design a new badge or crest?

A: How about an "Elmira Maple Syrup Festival" crest, a "1st Elmira Link Camp" crest, or a "6 Star" crest?

Cub Individual and Pack Specialty Badges (ISB) (PSB)
Q: Can a Cub earn more than one of these badges?

A: Yes! A Cub may earn a new Cub Individual Specialty badge once a year and a Pack may earn a Pack Specialty badge once a year.

For ideas on what you can do for these badges, visit the Scouts Canada Cub Individual And Pack Specialty web page.

In Fall 2010, the Pack worked together in groups to create sample badge requirements. In addition to the International Scouting Relations, here are the samples we created:

Specialty Badge in Horseback Riding
  1. Show how to safely approach horses and discuss riding safety rules.
  2. Discuss the equipment needed and how it is used.

  5. Show how to stop a horse while riding.
  6. Show how to control a horse (start it walking and turning).
  7. Go on a ride.
  8. Discuss how to care for a horse.
Specialty Badge in Soapbox Derby Racing

  4. Race the car.

Emergency Preparedness Award (EPA)
Q: Will you be the first to earn this new award?

A: Maybe! Check out Scouts Canada Emergency Preparedness web page for more information.

First Aid Badge (FAD)
Q: Did you know the requirements for this badge have changed?

A: Check out the updated requirements page for more information.

Knots for Green Star (G-A02)
Here are some good knots for you to learn; the Sheet Bend, Clove Hitch, Fisherman's, Reef and Bowline knots. All these knots are also described in your Cub Book page 101.

Religion in Life / Spirituality Award Badge
Q: Did you know the new Spirituality Award (SPR) badge is an alternate to the Religion in Life (RIL) badge?

A: If the Religion in Life badge does not work for you, you can work on the Spirituality badge. The Scouts Canada Religion in Life web page has requirements for different Faiths and the Spirituality Award requirements. The Spirituality Award Badge goes on your sash where the Religion in Life badge would go.

Swimmer Badge (SWM)
Q: Did you know that if you have completed Red Cross Swim Kids Level 6, you have already earned your Swimmer Badge?

A: Some old Cub books say you need Aqua Quest Level 7 but swimming programs with the Lifesaving Society and the Red Cross have changed and Red Cross Swim Kids Level 6 is the same skill level as the old Aqua Quest Level 7. So if you completed either one, just bring in your report card!

More Help With Badges
Q: Looking for information, resources, or ideas for Cub badges?

A: Check out Scouts Canada Cub Badges web page.

Badge Colours
Q: Why do some badges have a blue background when most others have a yellow background?

A: Cub badges are different colours so the badges look better. Can you imagine a fish jumping out of a yellow background. Yuck! The background colours have no other purpose.
